JAMESTOWN, N.D. (JimmieAthletics.com) – Kevin Oberweiser (SR/Drummond, MT) scored 25 points and Jack Talley (SO/Sioux Falls, SD) posted a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds as the 15th-ranked University of Jamestown men’s basketball team closed out the regular season with an 88-75 win over No. 2 Morningside (Iowa) College Saturday afternoon at Harold Newman Arena.
The win gives the Jimmies (25-5, 15-5 Great Plains Athletic Conference) the second seed in the GPAC Tournament, which begins on Wednesday. Jamestown will host seventh-seed Hastings (Neb.) at 6:00 p.m.
Morningside (25-2, 17-2 GPAC) took early 9-0 and 11-2 leads, but the Jimmies used a 13-4 run, capped off by a Terrell Alfred (JR/Orlando, FL) three-pointer, to tie the game. UJ took its biggest lead of the half, 10 points, following a Brock Schrom (SO/Grand Rapids, MN) basket with 32 seconds left before halftime.
Oberweiser’s three-pointer at the 3:59 mark made it 80-63 Jimmies, and it appeared the game was over. However, Morningside went on a 12-1 run and cut the UJ lead to 81-75 with 2:25 in the game.
A strong defensive stand by Jamestown coupled with the game’s final seven points sealed the victory for the Orange and Black. The Mustangs had an eleven-game winning streak snapped, but still came away with the GPAC’s top seed in the postseason tournament.
Alfred finished with 19 points and Jon Purintun (SR/Linton, ND) was also in double figures with 12. Schrom had 10 rebounds to go along with six points.
Jamestown defeated Hastings in both of their regular season meetings, 90-80 on January 2 in Hastings and 92-91 January 26 in Jamestown.
