JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The City of Jamestown was contacted by the North Dakota Department of Health regarding the wastewater treatment and pretreatment requirements for the city in 2018.
The NDDoH reports that Jamestown is required to develop and implement a pretreatment program.
“By having a local pretreatment program, the city will be better able to react to any issue with the mechanical wastewater treatment plant and better maintain upgrades to this asset,” the Department stated.
Marty Haroldson with the North Dakota Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Program (NDPDES) came before the City Public Works committee Thursday.

Haroldson stated that the requirement comes as part of the Clean Water Act of 1972 with changes since. The city currently has four entities that are being monitored by the NPPDES Program. By having the city develop the program, they would then be required to maintain the pretreatment programs for the area.

The city will need to be compliant by 2021 or before with the pretreatment costs being paid by the user. The NDDoH will monitor compliance with the city permitting authority.
