JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – LaMoure/Litchville-Marion, Carrington and Oakes came away with victories on Saturday’s action of the boys basketball District 5 Tournament.
Elimination Game: Oakes 64, Midkota 46
The Tornadoes defeated the Mustangs for the second time this season and ended the year for Midkota.
Midkota finishes the season without a win in district play, but the Mustangs, for the second straight day, were able to battle to keep the game within shouting distance in the 3rd quarter. Trailing by just 6 entering the 4th quarter, Midkota was unable to keep it close for the last 8 minutes as Oakes would win by 18.
A balance scoring attack and a team that stayed out of foul trouble were the keys for Oakes. Four different scorers had points in double digits and only one player had four or more fouls.
Steele Hansen was the leading scorer for the 2nd straight day with 18 points and Alex Muggli had 13. Garret Meehl recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Midkota’s leading scorer was Breck Ehlers with 13 points and 4 made 3-pointers.
Semifinal Game: LaMoure/Litchville-Marion 53, Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier 43
LLM extended its winning streak to 13 games with the 10 point victory over EKM and will head to the district championship on Monday.
Both teams shot 40% from the field but LLM was able to hit 8 more free throws than EKM. That was the big discrepancy that allowed LLM to take the win by 10.
LLM was lead by Jamison Kramer with 20 points and 12 rebounds, Shay Ness with 16 points and Rory Gentzkow, off the bench, had 14 points and 3 3-pointers.
EKM’s leading scorer was Alex Huber with 14 points and 7 rebounds.
Semifinal Game: Carrington 53, Ellendale 45
In the battle of the birds, Carrington, after hitting a lull through the middle quarters, was able to pull away from Ellendale down the stretch to advance to the district championship.
Carrington used big 1st and 4th quarters to create the separation needed and they needed it. Ellendale outscored Carrington by 5 through the middle quarters to make it a game headed to the 4th quarter.
The Cardinals of Carrington would hang on to win. A big reason why was because they were able to hold Austin Molan and Scott Wagner to 23 points combined after the night they exploded for 59 combined points.
It took Seth Nelson a little time to get going but he finishes as Carrington’s leading scorer with 14 points and Payton Smith had 12.
