OAKES, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Oakes Post 36 improved to 2-0 in league play last night with an 18-8 victory over Ellendale.

Oakes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a couple Ellendale errors and a pair of RBI base hits from Jaidy Gebhardt and Tyler Voightman.

Oakes’ starting pitcher Brady McKenna was good through two innings. He retired the first five hitters with a couple of strikeouts but ran into trouble in the third. Ellendale second baseman Hunter Thorpe drove a ball to the gap in right field to plate a couple runs to tie the game. Starting pitcher Tanner Geffre and first baseman Max Waltman gave Ellendale a 4-2 lead with a pair of RBI singles.

Then the big inning happened.

Down two, Oakes sent 15 batters to the plate in the fourth inning and scored nine times. The inning was highlighted by Taylor Scahall’s two-run triple.

With Oakes up by eight, Ellendale didn’t go away. Ellendale scored a run in the 5th inning and would score three more times in the 6th. Thorpe added another RBI and Dakota King contributed an RBI base knock. Oakes would pull away, again, in the bottom of the 6th by scoring six times and win via the 10-run rule. Coy Awender delivered the final RBI hit to win the game. Awender finished his night with a couple runs scored, an RBI and two stolen bases as well.

Oakes’ three and four hitters turned in great performances. Taylor Schall reached base five times, scored three times, recorded four hits and two RBI’s. Alex Nelson scored four times, drove in three and went 2-5.
