VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Valley City State University athletic director Jill DeVries announced today that head softball coach Michael Mook has resigned his position at VCSU to become the head coach at West Texas A&M University, an NCAA Division II school in Canyon, Texas. 

Mook led the Viking softball team for four seasons, compiling a 154-61 overall record at VCSU.

“We wish Mike the best in his new opportunity,” said DeVries. “He elevated our program during his four seasons here and has positioned our softball team to have continued success going forward.”

DeVries said a national search for a new head coach will start immediately.

The Valley City State University softball team is coming off a record-breaking season during which they won 54 games and advanced to the NAIA World Series for the third time in program history. This year’s team posted a 54-5 overall record and broke more than a dozen individual and team records, including wins (54), runs scored (399), hits (574), RBIs (344), doubles (112) and triples (20). 

The Vikings won the North Star Athletic Association regular season and tournament championships. Valley City State was a No. 1 seed for the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round and won the bracket in Columbia, Mo., to advance to the 10-team NAIA World Series for the first time since 2006. VCSU was ranked as high as No. 6 in the nation.

Valley City State University is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and is a founding member of the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) conference.
