DICKEY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The small community of Dickey, North Dakota rallied 10 years ago to raise money for the Hospice of the Red River Valley.

On Saturday, July 13th, the community will come together once more to put on the unique fundraiser.

Organizer Chrissy Kartes says they got the idea to start the event when a loved one in the community passed away.

Kartes says what started as a community get together has suddenly grown into what it is today.

Kartes says Dickey is about 35 miles south of Jamestown near LaMoure and says the surrounding communities also help out.

So far this year, 26 cooks have signed up to bring anywhere from 4 to 6 racks of ribs of their own recipe. Judges then taste ribs and judge them off the Kansas City BBQ Rules. Then, the left over ribs are served up for a free-will donation that is then given to the Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Kartes says they will accept cooks up to the day before the event to compete. She says they’ve had participants from South Dakota, Minneapolis, and Chicago.

The event will also feature the Long Branch Boys band from 8 PM to Midnight as well as raffles and more. Kartes says they remind everyone to come join the event and remember what it’s all for.

If you’re interested cooking ribs, contact Chrissy Kartes at 701-778-7346. Registration forms and money can be delivered to the Dickey Bar or mailed to Chrissy Kartes at 213 3rd Street, Dickey, N.D., 58431.
