VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Grady Karges’ bases loaded triple highlighted a four run third inning and Jacob Johnson did the rest as Valley City defeated West Fargo 5-2 in game one of their doubleheader Tuesday night at Charlie Brown Field.

In the game that counts towards the East Region standings, Valley City got another strong pitching performance from Jacob Johnson and timely hitting to pickup a much needed victory in the East Region.

Trailing 2-1, Post 60 got base hits from Mitchell Taylor and John Beutler to lead off the third inning. Riley Gerhardt sacrificed them to third and second respectively. Alex Thornton tied the game at 2 when he singled to center field to score Taylor. After Connor May walked to load the bases, Karges cleared the bases with his first triple of the season.

Johnson allowed five hits and two unearned runs in 6 2/3 innings. He walked one and struckout 11. Johnson had to come out because he reached his pitch limit. Connor May got the last out of the game to get the save.

In game two, Valley City nearly pulled off a big comeback. Post 60 scored five runs in the bottom if the seventh but could come all the way back, losing 11-9.

Austin Thornton capped the big seventh with another bases loaded triple. He added an rbi groundout. Grady Karges had two hits and drove in two runs. Alex Thornton had two hits and scored twice. Easton Hesch scored three runs.

Valley City is now 10-14-1 overall and 7-4 in the East Region. They are off until next Wednesday when Grand Forks comes to Charlie Brown Field for an East Region doubleheader.
