JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The NDSU Extension Service of Stutsman County will be holding three separate food preservation classes in September.

According to the service, each course will go over different topics including food preservation facts & myths, water bath canning, and pressure canning. The first course begins September 4th at 6 PM.

“In this [first] class, we’re going to go over the facts and myths of food preservation and teach participants the current, USDA-recommended methods for food preservation,” the service states. “We will be focusing mainly on water bath and pressure canning, but will go a little bit into freezing as a form of food preservation, as well.”

The next two courses will be held on September 9th and September 16th respectively.

Christina Rittenbach with the NDSU Stutsman County Extension service says they had been informed of an increased interest in food preservation.

“We want to provide the public with research-based information on the topic. Food preservation is a science, not an art, and a lot of the old cookbooks or recipes that get passed down may no longer be considered safe,” Rittenbach stated. “Using research-tested methods and recipes will help to ensure that the end product is safe and will not make us sick.”
