RAPID CITY, S.D. – Angeline Gannon and Kirsten Ranke both placed in the Top 12 Saturday as the Valley City State cross country team opened the season at the Hardrocker Invite in Rapid City, S.D.

Gannon led the Vikings with an 11th-place finish in the women’s 5k race, crossing the line in a time of 22:44.84. Ranke was just behind in 12th place, finishing in a time of 22:56.14. Kristina Fricke (16th, 24:02), Brook Tibke (20th, 25:13) and Addie Willett (22nd, 25:41) rounded out VCSU’s team score. The Viking women placed fourth out of four teams, finishing just three points behind MSU-Billings.

On the men’s side, Valley City State placed fourth out of five teams. Govani Garza (31:43) and Jayden Wheeling (31:45) placed 24th and 25th, respectively, to lead the Viking men. Xander Seaman was just two spots back in 27th (32:41).

Up next: The Vikings have next weekend off before racing in the St. Olaf Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 21, in Northfield, Minn.
