JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – With the return of drier weather, the North Dakota Forest Service, Department of Emergency Services, and State Fire Marshal are working to promote fire prevention during National Fire Prevention Week, October 6th through the 12th.

The theme is “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape.”

According to the North Dakota Forest Service, the state records approximately 1,800 fire incidents each year. This includes both structural and wildfires.

Jamestown Fire Department Chief Jim Reuther says the department sees 50 to 70 calls annually in which the entire department is activated. Reuther says the most common causes in Jamestown include everyday activities.

Lieutenant Sheldon Mohr with the Department is spearheading education efforts during the week. Moore says they will be in all elementary schools in Jamestown during the week during the week.

The week also provides an opportunity to promote the importance of adhering to burn restrictions.

The American Red Cross Association is also urging everyone to test their smoke alarms during this week.

“During Fire Prevention Week, prepare your family for home fires before the holidays and cold weather increase the risk of these crises,” said Lynn Speral, CEO of the Red Cross Dakotas Region.

“Home fires are most often caused by cooking and heating equipment, and we want everyone to stay safe. Please install and test smoke alarms on every level of your home and practice your escape plan until everyone can get out in two minutes or less.”
