CRETE, Neb. (JimmieAthletics.com) – Jamaine Derogene’s eight-yard touchdown run with eight seconds left gave Doane University a 28-21 win over the University of Jamestown football team Saturday afternoon.
The Jimmies opened up a 14-0 lead at the 9:47 mark of the second quarter on rushing touchdowns by Garrett Mitchell (SO/Shakopee, Minn.) and Jordan Mann (SR/Bismarck, N.D.). Mitchell’s nine-yard score capped off a 12 play, 91 yard drive while Mann’s one-yard plunge finished off a 13 play, 68 yard drive.
Doane cut the lead to 14-7 on a 24-yard pass from Drake Davidson to Levi Sudbeck with 1:27 before halftime. The Tigers tied the game after Davidson found Izaiah Celestine for an 11-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-all with 13:48 remaining.
Jamestown retook the lead with 6:13 left as Mann and Barry Williams Jr. (SO/Las Vegas, Nev.) connected on a 55-yard scoring play to make it 21-14.
On their next possession, Doane needed only five plays to go 60 yards for a score, culminating in Davidson’s second touchdown pass to Sudbeck on the day.
Following a three-and-out by the Jimmies, Doane took over on its own 48-yard line with 3:13 in the game. Seven plays later, Derogene found the end zone for the eventual game winning score.
Mann finished 11-of-18 passing for 121 yards and a touchdown. Tanner Mathern (JR/Edgeley, N.D.) carried 14 times for 83 yards and Jimmy Hatch (SR/Sacramento, Calif.) added 30 yards on eight carries. Mitchell caught seven passes for 49 yards while Williams had four catches for 73 yards and a score.
Levi Scribner (JR/Crescent City, Calif.) led the defense with 11 total tackles, while Aaron Mack (FR/Jamestown, N.D.) and Troy Stuard (SR/Daingerfield, Texas) had four each. Gavin Pancirov (SR/Las Vegas, Nev.), Brooks Canfield (SO/Tempe, Ariz.), and Marco Taddia (JR/Ferrara, Italy) recorded a quarterback sack and Mitchell Swartz (SO/Peyton, Colo.) and Marcelo Sanchez (SR/Poulsbo, Wash.) were credited with a half-sack each. UJ held Doane to 18 yards rushing on 19 attempts, an average of 0.9 yards per carry. The defense surrendered 286 yards to the Tigers, the second-fewest amount of yards given up this season.
Jamestown travels to Sioux City, Iowa, next Saturday to face No. 1 Morningside (Iowa) College. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
