VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – As it turns out, it wasn’t the last home match of the season for the Valley City volleyball team. The Hi-Liners used another balanced defense and got by a scrappy Fargo North team 25-16, 20-25, 27-25, 25-17.

With the win, Valley City is the number four seed in next week’s EDC tournament, and will host Grand Forks Red River next Tuesday in the quarterfinals.

In the first set, Valley City used a 5-0 run to take a 7-3 lead and never trailed after that. North would get close on a couple of occasions, but the Hi-Liners ended the first set on an 8-3 run to win  25-16.

In the second set, Fargo North jumped out to an 8-3 lead then Valley City used a 7-2 run to tie it at 10. But the Spartans went on a 5-1 run to take a 15-11. Back came Valley City on a 4-0ru  to tie it at 15. North would outscore the Hi-Liners 10-5 the rest of the way to win 25-20.

The third set was the best of the night. It would be back and forth the entire set. North lead right off the bat 3-1. But Valley would come back with a 6-2 run to take a 7-5 lead. The lead would expand to 11-8. Then Fargo North used a 8-2 run to go up 16-13. But not to be outdone, Valley City scored nine straight points to 22-16. Back came North with a 7-1 run to tie it at 23. They would be tied at 24 and 25 until Valley City scored the last two points for a 27-25 win.

Again early on in the fourth set, neither team could take control. But then with the score 5-5, Valley City did take control with a 7-3 run to lead 12-8. North would get to within three on a number of occasions but never to get over the hump as the Hi-Liners scored the last six points for a 25-17 win.

Hi-Liner Head coach says her team wasn’t sharp, but they got the job done.

Macy Olstad and Dylann Diegel each had a double-double. Olstad had a team high 13 kills and 10 digs while Diegel had a team high 24 assists and 10 digs. Cali Halgrimson had niner kills and a team leading 20 digs. Peyton Pederson had seven kills offensively and six blocks defensively. Lindsey Noeske had six kills and Natalie Lemnus added 12 assists. Libero Alyssa Hatcher had 15 digs and team high three service aces.

Cruff says this team is ready for the post season.
