JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Dr. Rosalie Etherington, North Dakota State Hospital Superintendent, was recognized by the State Historical Society of North Dakota with their Excellence in Local History award Friday.

The award was presented during the North Dakota State Hospital Museum open house. The museum was put together in 2008, ahead of the hospitals 125 anniversary. 134 years of history are chronicled within the museum, located on the fourth floor of the Learning Resource Center building.

Claudia Berg with the State Historical Society stated that there were two award recipients this year.

Berg says Dr. Etherington and her staff have done a lot of work over time to create, collect, and organize the history of the hospital inside the museum.

Dr. Etherington was honored to be recognized for her work. She says many of those who she’s worked with helped provide inspiration to create the historic array.

What was once a sun porch is now a museum, lined with artifacts, medical tools, articles, and gravestones that show just how long the hospital has served North Dakota and the medical profession.

Dr. Etherington says they had been collecting items for some time and put them together before the 125th celebration. She says looking ahead, they have some short term and long term goals for the museum.

Dr. Etherington says they may soon be looking to find another space as more information and articles come together.

The museum is open by appointment. Interested individuals can call 701-253-3964. Information about the hospital’s history and the museum is also available online at www.ndshmuseum.org.
