SIOUX CITY, Iowa (NewsDakota.com) – The University of Jamestown stayed unbeaten in Pool H with a 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 31-29, 25-19) victory over Westmont on the second day of the NAIA National Championship at the Tyson Event Center. The Jimmies are the only unbeaten team left in their pool after they handed Westmont their first loss.

Jamestown lead 14-10 in set two after taking the opener and looked to be in control of the match early. The Warriors scored on a free-ball and suddenly the momentum shifted like a tidal wave. Westmont seized control to take the second and jumped ahead 9-1 in set three.

“We had to make a change, they were learning our pattern,” said head coach Jon Hegerle after the match of his decision to replace setter Miranda Lowman with Megan Gaffaney. “A new setter means a new pattern and sometimes the players rally around a player that gets out there the first time.”

“I told [Lowman] we had to make a change, but she was going to go back in to serve. She’s been around here a long time and she trusts what we are doing. She looked at me and said, ‘I know, coach.'”

It certainly worked. Gaffaney helped spark a run that eventually pulled Jamestown to within 17-16. Westmont regained control and extended their lead to 24-19. The Jimmies staved off five consecutive set points and tied the match at 24.

On the way to the final 31-29 score that Jamestown won by, each team had to fight off a pair of set points. Taylor Sabinash eventually split the back row defenders with a kill to punctuate an historic comeback.

The 31-29 loss seemed to deflate Westmont and the Jimmies controlled most of the fourth set on the way to a 25-19 win.

Corina Ruud lead the Jimmies with 16 kills. Izzy Wedell added 13.

Jamestown will play No. 9 Columbia at 4pm on Thursday in their final pool play match.
