JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown Arts Center has welcomed in artist Dan Smith and his exhibit “HOOPS” through January 18th.

Smith, of Nanson, ND, has been a professional photographer since 1972.

Arts Center Executive Director Mindi Schmitz says the exhibit focuses entirely on basketball hoops.

The exhibit features 27 works by smith. Gallery Manager Sally Jeppson scheduled the exhibit with the winter and how we all may be dreaming of warmer weather.

“I thought the exhibit might appeal to some who don’t generally come to see our art exhibits. This exhibition addresses much more than basketball, which the photographer Dan Smith captures so well in his description of this project,” Jeppson states.

Smith says the project started with one image and went from there.

“The Old Idaho State Penitentiary was the site. The witness room of the Execution Chamber the location. One small window looking out. The shadow of a basketball standard on an empty prison yard. The first of what was to be HOOPS, an exploration. A trip into barns, yards, garages and fields. A visit to a world of aspiration and hope, of youthful dreams and bitter failure.”

The exhibition is sponsored by the North Dakota Art Gallery Association with support from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from the State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Schmitz says they’ll be holding a lunch with the artist that is open to the public for $5 where you can come and learn more about the artist and the exhibit.

The gallery is free and open to the public weekdays from 9 AM to 5 PM and Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM.
