RICHLAND, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – It turned out to be a great Thursday night for the Oakes Tornadoes girls basketball team. Oakes (3-1) secured a top 10 victory over eighth ranked Richland (2-1), and Junior Forward Sadie Hansen scored her 1,00th career point.

Oakes defeated Richland 67-65 to notch its third victory of the season. On the heels against another top 10 foe on Tuesday, Head Coach Brennan Hack said it was a great bounce back and a great game.

“Was really close, competitive game in the second half,” said Hack via text message.

“Back and forth scoring the whole half, don’t thin either team was up more than 3 in the last quarter and a half,” added Hack.

Oakes had to outscore Richland’s explosive scorer Sophomore Megan Roob. The sophomore put up 40 points in the season opener against Lisbon and added to that already high average with 37 points last night.

The Tornadoes combated Roob with a couple 20+ scorers in Hansen and Nicole Schmitz. Hansen had a team high 28 points, and hit a go ahead three pointer in the first half to eclipse 1,000 career points. Schmitz posted a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

After a rigorous week, Oakes has earned a week off. The next time out will be Friday, December 20th at home for the Cowbell game against the Ellendale Cardinals. The girls will play first at 6:00, and the boys will follow.
