JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Being on the front-lines of the pandemic, Jamestown Area Ambulance (JAA) is finding ways to keep their crews safe while providing service to the public.

JAA Operations Manager Andrew Berkey says they continue to follow CDC and state recommendations regarding Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). This includes the newest recommendation to wear cloth masks when out in public.

“Because as we know, someone could carry the virus and not have any symptoms initially. Therefore the cloth masks are to protect the people around us when we are out in the public setting,” Berkey stated. “Our logistics team has done very well at keeping up with PPE supply demands that ensures we are protected on ambulance calls. However, we wanted to do our part when we are out in the community, whether on duty or off duty.”

JAA uses PPE such as N95s, gowns, gloves, glasses, and boot covers as safety precautions. But, the service lacked the recommended masks. With that need in mind, the community came together to donate over 40 cloth masks for the crews.

“The responses came flooding in almost immediately, which is an incredible testament to the strength that exists within our community. I honestly do not know if our service needs more masks, but when we know that we are OK, we will take what is left and give them to other First Responder agencies,” Berkey said.

Ambulance crews still face challenges when it comes to keeping the public healthy and safe. Berkey added that the current pandemic is something very different and they are working to adapt to the situation.

“Our leadership team is working around the clock researching and developing policies and procedures that keep our EMTs, Paramedics, and patients safe,” he stated. “Our Incident Command team at Jamestown Ambulance is constantly adjusting to new information and helping keep everything organized and prepared. And of course, our EMTs and Paramedics have done an incredible job of keeping pace with the changes.”

Berkey credited his staff with upholding the high standard that they have set in Jamestown while adjusting to PPE and procedure changes.

“I couldn’t be more proud in their ability to get that done. The work behind the scenes is truly something amazing to witness, but that is the beauty of EMS and public service, the community just needs to know that when we are needed, we will be there, and that our standard for patient care will never be compromised. It is a promise that I can ensure Jamestown Area Ambulance has, and will always uphold.”
