BISMARCK, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Grilling during beautiful summer days is a great tradition that comes with responsibility.

Grilling can be both a safety concern and fire hazard.

July is the peak month for grill fires. Roughly half of the injuries associated with grilling are thermal burns. When care is taken, safe grilling can be a great way to celebrate the warm days of summer, but it’s important to take a moment to ensure your safety.

Both propane and charcoal barbecue grills are meant to only be used outdoors. They should be placed away from your home, deck railings, away from eaves, and overhanging branches. Never leave grills or any fire unattended. Make sure to take time after using your grill to clean the grease and fat that build up in the trays below the grill. Keep your children and pets at least 3 feet away from the grill area.

If using a charcoal grill, keep the charcoal fluid away from heat sources. When you are finished grilling, dispose of the coals into a metal container after they have completely cooled. Do not pour the coals onto the ground, as it only takes one small spark to start a wildland fire.

If using a propane grill and the flame goes out, turn the grill and gas off. Then, wait at least 5 minutes before attempting to re-light it.

Enjoy cooking on a grill, but remember all of the precautions that you need to take to ensure your safety and the safety of others.
