VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – ON THE MOVE is making changes this year!  There will be new FREE virtual opportunities to eat healthy and get moving available on the barnesonthemove.org website in place of the usual community program that always starts on January 1st.

“Exercise is crucial to our good health whether we are in the middle of a pandemic or not.  Regular physical activity can greatly reduce the risk of conditions such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer,” explains Sharon Buhr, chair of the ON THE MOVE Partnership.

Feeling down due to COVID?  Exercise is also a proven mood booster and can help adults reduce stress levels, improve self-esteem and build emotional resilience.  ON THE MOVE encourages everyone to check out the website to help reach fitness goals in the New Year!

A class called “Walk Away the Pounds” had been offered by ON THE MOVE for many years which included an instructor led walking video and a hand weight routine.  The ON THE MOVE website now features links to the walking videos by Leslie Sansone so the class can be done in the comfort of your own home!

Teresa Garrahy who led these classes and taught the hand weight routine will lead the instructional videos on the ON THE MOVE website.  There is a copy of the hand weight routine that was used with this class available to download.

There will also be video links for yoga with Janice Berg who has taught yoga classes in person for ON THE MOVE over the years.  Janice has a beginner yoga and a chair yoga available at the ON THE MOVE website and more videos are planned to be added in the coming weeks.

“We are excited to offer cooking class links as well as LIVE virtual cooking classes this year,” states Andrea Winter, licensed registered dietitian and ON THE MOVE Coordinator at City County Health District, she continues, “Sue Milender from NDSU Extension and I will be partnering to offer virtual cooking classes and a baking school for kids in January and we will also post cooking demos on skillet recipes and stir fry’s. There will be fast and easy recipes and menus available to download as well.”

Starting in January, ON THE MOVE will feature one-minute exercise breaks on KOVC, TED and Big Dog radio stations.  The exercises are just one minute long and can be done at work or at home!  “There will be a variety of fun exercises to get you up and energized!  The more you move throughout the day, the better you feel,” states Skyler Ienuso, ON THE MOVE grant coordinator at City County Health District, he continues, “These exercise breaks will get you moving, help you feel good and give you energy throughout the day!”

The program is funded through a federal grant and 18 ON THE MOVE partner organizations.  The managing partner for ON THE MOVE is City County Health District and other partners include CHI Mercy Health, NDSU Extension – Barnes County, Sanford Health – Valley City, Essentia Health, VC Chamber of Commerce, Tourism and Small Business,  Open Door Center, City of Valley City, Ministerial Association, Abused Persons Outreach Center, Barnes County Senior Citizens, Valley City Public Schools, St. Catherine School, Valley City State University, Valley City Parks and Rec, Sheyenne Care Center, Barnes County Ambulance.

“We are not going to let the stress of COVID get us down in the New Year,” states Sharon Buhr, “Exercise is a wonderful stress reliever, so we want to encourage everyone to get moving!”
