CARRINGTON, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Blowing and drifting snow with high winds can cause havoc to farm land and rural roads across the state.

The Foster County Soil Conservation District is recommending that area residents explore using “living snow fences” to help keep roads clear over the winter months.

Dionn Schaaf is the District Manager for the Foster County District.

Schaff says the idea is to control the effect of the snow. This goes for farmsteads and communities.

Most living snow fences are planted on the north or west side of roads.

Schaaf says depending on situation, there are multiple ways to accomplish a living snow fence. She added that taller windbreaks capture more snow and the taller the windbreak, the better the coverage.
