JAMESTOWN, ND. (NewsDakota.com) – The Blue Jays gymnastics team had plenty to celebrate about on Saturday as head coach Dave Tews took home the Coach of the Year award. In addition, senior Rachel Schiele was awarded the NDHSCA Outstanding Senior athlete for 2021.


As a team, Jamestown finished in third place in the all-around meet, and Hayley Nelson placed third in the individual team competition. The junior finished with an all-around score of 36.883 and had a third-place finish on vault, and she also took fifth on bars.

The Blue Jays got top ten finishes in every event and Emma Hillereud ninth overall in the all-around. Her best performance was on the floor, as she took third with a 9.533. Julia Skari ended up 12th in the all-around for Jamestown at 35.817.

Dickison finished first as a team to take home the state title for the sixth straight year. Amy Fridley and Brooklyn Deguzman of Dickinson took home the top two spots in the all-around competition.

In total, Dickinson scored 148.500, and Valley City finished second with 145.750. Jamestown was just behind Valley City at 144.400.

This was the last season for Jamestown legendary coach Tews. After 43 years of coaching, Mayor Dwaine Heinrich made the proclamation that February 27th is Dave Tews Day.
