VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Valley City High School instrumental students competed in the EDC/State small group instrumental contest on Wednesday, April 7th at Valley City. Due to Covid restrictions the contest was held in-house at Valley City High School. Valley City entered a total of 14 instrumental groups in the contest. The students received 0-III (three) ratings, 0-II (two) ratings, 2 – I (one) ratings, 12 region star ratings, 3 state star ratings and 1 Outstanding Performance. The students performed very well and represented VCHS in a positive and respective manner.

The ratings are classified as follows: III – fair performance, II – good performance, I – excellent performance, region star – superior performance, state star – state superior performance and Outstanding Performace (OP – best performance of the day in the venue).

Receiving I ratings were the Tuba Duet – Stepahnie Hoffarth and Brinklyn Johnson and the Mixed Woodwind Ensemble – Hailey Chase and Kaycee Smith.

Receiving Region Star ratings were the Mixed Instrument Ensemble – Faith Peterson, Amelia Meester, Carly Goven, Hadlee Mathias and Taylor Ask, the Alto Saxophone Duet – Avery Suhr and Hailey Thoreson, the French Horn Duet – Casey Kruger and Benjamin Kruta, the Clarinet Trio – Aurora Ziniel, Jerrica Eldridge and Morgan Jenner, the Mixed Brass Duet – Brynn Hagen and Daniel Wintch, the Oboe Duet – Cassie Mundal and Abbie Gilbertson, the Flute Duet – Britta Roehrich and Julianne McPartland, the Alto Saxophone Quartet – Tyana Judd, Abby Redfearn, Addy Kvilvang and Hadley Thoreson, the Trumpet Trio – Jonathan Redfearn, Justin Roswick and Jacob Meyer, the Baritone Horn Duet – Tucker Schonert and Gabriel Herzog, the Percussion Ensemble – Kailer Logan, Tucker Johnson, Emma Mielke, Evan Mielke, Faith Orner and Noah Haglund, and the Mixed Brass Duet – Luke Plagens and Owen Plagens.

Receiving State Star ratings were the Baritone Horn Duet – Tucker Schonert and Gabriel Herzog, the Percussion Ensemble – Kailer Logan, Tucker Johnson, Emma Mielke, Evan Mielke, Faith Orner and Noah Haglund, and the Mixed Brass Duet – Luke Plagens and Owen Plagens.

Receiving an Outstanding Performance for their duet at the contest were the Mixed Brass Duet of brothers Luke and Owen Plagens.

The judge for the day was Mr. Sebastian Tackling from Fargo, ND and the accompanist for the day was Cyndi Hill from Valley City.

The State Star winning ensembles, along with the 6th grade band, the Junior High Band, the Concert Band and the Jazz Band will perform at the Jazzin’ Concert on May 13th, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hi-Liner Activity Center.
