JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The first day of the 2021 Class A Legion Baseball State Tournament has come to a close at Jack Brown Stadium in Jamestown. The sun fought through the smoke filled sky enough to shine down on a great day of games.

GAME 1

Wahpeton 3

Bismarck Caps 1

Gavin Schroeder hit a two-RBI single in the bottom of the third to help Wahpeton Post 20 defeat the Bismarck Caps 3-1 in the first game of the State A Legion Tourney. Ethan Manock was 2-for-3 with two singles along with Caden Hockert and Tori Uhlich each a single. On the mound, Post 20 used two pitchers. Hunter Wamre worked four and a third inning, on 70 pitches, two earned runs, six hits, one strikeout and one hit batter. Ethan Manock came in and worked two and two-thirds, 34 pitches, no runs, two strikeouts, no hits. Josh Hardy took the loss, working six innings, 83 pitches, three earned runs, eight strikeouts, one walk, one hit batter. Wahpeton improves to 33-6 overall, the Caps drop to 25-15.
GAME 2
Minot Metros 0
West Fargo Vets 8
The offense came alive for the Vets as they put up 8 runs on their way to victory in game 2 of tournament action.  The Vets will take on Wahpeton in the 4:30pm game tomorrow at Jack Brown Stadium.
GAME 3
West Fargo Aces 2
Bismarck Reps 1
West Fargo gets a late go ahead run to pull ahead of the Reps to win game 3 of the day. The Aces will now play the host team Jamestown tomorrow evening in the night game at 7pm.
GAME 4
Valley City 0
Jamestown 1
They say you save the best for last, and that line fits this game perfect. Both starters in this game got settled into their groves early. For Valley City, Mitchell Taylor pitched 6 great innings on the mound. He got into his only jam in the second inning, with the bases loaded Taylor struck out the number nine hitter of Jamestown to get out of the inning unharmed. The only blemish for Taylor came in the fifth when Eagles shortstop Payton Hochhalter got on base with a one out walk. After a passed ball, Hochhalter found himself in scoring position when Michael Mahoney would drive him in with and RBI single to give Jamestown the 1 to 0 lead.  Other than that you couldn’t have asked for a better performance from the right hander on the mound this evening. Taylor goes 6 innings giving up just the 1 run while striking out 3.
On the mound for Jamestown was righty Jacoby Nold. Nold frustrated the VC batters all evening and only allowed one base runner to get passed first base, and that was Alex Thornton who was left stranded at third in the top of the first inning. Jacoby Nold went 6 and a third on the bump giving up just 2 hits no runs and striking out 5. He was lifted in the 7th due to his pitch count. Jamestown would bring in lefty Mason Lunzman. The left hander made a brilliant pick off play with a base runner at first base who reached on a fielding error. Instead of having 1 on and 1 out, Lunzman got the runner at first and had a 3 to 2 count with 2 outs in the top of the 7th. He would complete the strike out to pick up the save and give his team the 1 to 0 win.
Day 2 of action gets started at 11am when the Bismarck Caps take on the Minot Metros. Game 2 will be between the Bismarck Reps and the Valley City Royals. You can hear that game on 103.1 FM The Raven. In the third game Wahpeton will play the West Fargo Vets at 430pm and that game can be heard on KBMW AM 1450.
