LAMOURE, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – While melanoma affects mostly adults ages 60 and up, there are steps you can take to prevent the dangerous skin cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, about 106,110 new melanomas will be diagnosed this year. Cancer of the skin is by far the most common of all cancers. Melanoma accounts for only about 1% of skin cancers but causes a large majority of skin cancer deaths.

Sierra Weight is a Nurse Practitioner and Prevention Grant Facilitator at LaMoure County Public Health.

Weight says if you start seeing the signs and symptoms of melanoma, you’re encouraged to get a screening as soon as possible.

LaMoure County Public Health was also the recipient of a grant through True Wellness and the North Dakota Cancer Control program to provide free screenings for area individuals.
