Sonja Lillian Hefty, 83, Valley City, ND, passed away of natural causes on August 11, 2021 at CHI Mercy Health, Valley City, ND.  A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, August 21st at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Valley City.  Visitation will be held one hour before the service at the Church on Saturday afternoon.  Inurnment will be in the North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery, Mandan, ND.

Sonja was born on January 29, 1938 in Valley City to Sig and Lilly (Berge) Overbo. Sonja attended country school near Pillsbury, ND and later College High in Valley City.

Sonja was united in marriage to Robert Hefty, Valley City, on June 25, 1957. Sonja worked for many years at Woolworth’s starting as a clerk, working her way up the ladder as the store manager at the time of Woolworth’s closing. In her free time she enjoyed time at the family cabin on Lake Ashtabula, her fondness for pets, and her flowers. She had a true green thumb. In 1993 her husband Robert suffered a debilitating illness which turned her focus to a fulltime caregiver for over 19 years until his passing in 2013. Sonja was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.

Sonja is survived by her two sons, Rocky (LaVal) Hefty, Bismarck, ND and Alan Hefty, Jamestown, ND. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, five brothers, and one sister.

The family prefers memorials to either Our Savior’s Lutheran Church or the Sheyenne Valley Friends of Animals.
