VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – It was the first of two nights for alumni weekend at VCSU. On this night, both the woman’s and men’s basketball teams played host to Mayville State. Unfortunately for the alumni and Vikings fans, both of their teams lost on this night, with a bit of a surprise. Late in the 4th quarter of the woman’s game, the power went out at the W.E Osman Fieldhouse causing a delay and ultimately resulting in the woman’s game ending a bit early. The men’s game was back and forth all evening long and wasn’t decided until the final seconds of regulation.

Woman: Mayville State 62 VCSU 33

In the first quarter of this one it was apparent right away that the Comets were controlling the boards. They did an excellent job of collecting rebounds both defensively and offensively. In the second quarter Mayville’s Mackenzie Hughes hit a pair of 3-pointers to help extend her teams lead going into halftime to 32-19. After the break the Comets basically took the game over. They came out in the second half going on a 19-0 run. Fourth quarter, the Vikings did their best to try and make it a a game but the Comets were just too much. Late in the fourth quarter the power went out in the bubble. After the long delay the decision was made to call the game final, and Mayville State wins this one 62-33.

Men: Mayville State 80 VCSU 76

This was a great game with both teams changing leads all through out. Mayville State jumped ahead on the scoreboard quickly making it 6-0. VCSU did a great job of answering and taking an 8-6 lead. From then on both teams would trade leads. In the first half Duoth Gach hit a pair of 3’s to get the home crowd going early. If that wasn’t enough, Gach would run down the court and right hand slam dunk to really put the crowd into a frenzy. Vikings had the lead at halftime 35-32. Second half was more of the same, both teams going back and forth on the scoreboard. The Comets would steal momentum and the lead and go up 78-76 with under 15 seconds remaining. With the game still hanging in the balance, Comets senior Latrelle Franklin would hit a beautiful fadeaway jump shot to give Mayville State the 80-76 lead with 7.5 seconds left in regulation. The Comets would hang on to win by that score, 80-76.

With the losses tonight, the woman’s Vikings team drops to 6-10 overall and 3-3 in the conference. For the men’s team they drop to 11-8 overall and now just 2-4 in the conference. Both teams won’t have long to think about this one as they both return to action at home on Saturday when both teams host Presentation College. Woman’s game is at 3PM and the men’s game is at 5PM, both games can be heard on KOVC.
