MOOREHEAD, M.N. (VCSUAthletics.com) – Valley City State University athletes won four events and had nine Top 2 finishes Saturday at the Cobber Indoor Open hosted by Concordia College.

The VCSU men’s track and field team totaled 51 points and placed third out of the five teams competing Saturday. The Viking women finished with 24 points and placed fourth. The top six individuals in each event scored team points.

Taylor Sargent won the women’s 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.52 seconds, while Brooke Malsom was second in long jump with a leap of 5.04 meters. Hannah Gordon took second in the shot put with a throw of 12.11 meters.

On the men’s side, JT Reed and Zachary Co both had two Top 2 finishes on Saturday. Reed ran a personal-best 22.88 seconds to win the 200 meters, and then placed second in the 60 meters with a time of 7.08 seconds.

Co took first place in the shot put with a top throw of 16.37 meters. He added a second place finish in the weight throw, recording a mark of 16.84 meters. Spencer Mattheis also picked up a victory for the men as he won the 400 meters in a time of 1:01.23.

Clay Kummer was second in the 60 meter hurdles and Jayden Gerringer placed second in the men’s high jump.

Up next: Valley City State will compete at the UND Indoor Open in Grand Forks on Jan. 28-29.
