OAKES, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Oakes Tornadoes girls basketball team got a non-region win against the Lisbon Broncos by a final score of 51-41 on Tuesday night.

In the first half, both teams struggled offensively. Whether it was turnovers or missed shots, finding points was difficult. Oakes junior Laikyn Roney was the lone exception after getting 12 points in the first half, however, she picked up three fouls which limited her playing time. The Broncos made their money in the first half from free throws. Nine of their 25 first half points came from the free throw line. The Tornadoes were able to hold off Lisbon enough to hold on to a 27-25 lead at the break.

Oakes made some adjustments in the second half, and Roney was able to avoid further foul trouble and still play well offensively. However, Lisbon stayed tough and came into the fourth quarter with a one-point lead. The Tornadoes’ defense turned on the jets in the final eight minutes only allowing three points and answering with 14 of their own to come away with the double-digit win.

Roney led all scorers with her 23 points going 3-6 from beyond the arc. Junior center Emma Muggli finished with nine points going 4-7 from the floor. For the Broncos, sophomore forward Kyra Haecherl led the team in scoring with 11 points, but she was held scoreless in the fourth quarter. She made five of the team’s 15 free throws in 20 attempts.

With the win, Oakes improves to 9-6 and will take on the LaMoure-Litchville-Marion Loboes on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m in a crucial District 5 contest. As for Lisbon, they fall to 6-7 in regular season play.
