Coach’s Thoughts:

On Friday, Kai and Trey had a bye and then an easier match to make the quarters. They fought through losing the first set in the quarterfinals to come back and win the next two sets to state qualify and make the semifinals.

Saturday, they played the #2 seed in Bourke and Bry and played their most complete doubles match of the season. We were serving and returning well, attacking the ball from the baseline and closing off the net. Our defense was amazing to get us back into points as well.  The win put us in the EDC Championship match.

In that match, we had the most amazing points of the season. Our movement, our gets, and our put-a-ways were all impeccable.  Central was on their game and took advantage of a break in both sets to win the championship. This was the Hi-Liners first boys doubles team in the EDC championship in the last 20 years. Congrats to Trey and Kai on their 2nd place EDC doubles finish!

For the rest of our team in the individual competition, Max and Gavin both played well in their singles draw and left it all on the court. Casey finished his career on a high note earning two wins and playing great before losing to a state qualifier in Kasen Baer. Alex and Miles won their opening match before dropping to the #4 seed. We had our chances to make the state qualifying round on the consolation side, but it was not to be.

Kai went on to be named All-EDC for the second time. Kai was also named one of three Co-Senior Athletes of the Year. This is the third straight year that a Hi-Liner was named Co-Senior Athlete of the Year.

Kai and Trey will open up their state tournament next Friday in Minot against the #7 seed from the WDA, Backen/Lefevre from Jamestown.
