WILLISTON, N.D. — A back-and-forth battle came down to one decisive inning Sunday as the Valley City Post 60 Royals saw their season come to an end with a 15-10 loss to the Fargo Post 2 Jets in an elimination game at the Class A State Legion Baseball Tournament.

The teams combined for 25 runs and exchanged the lead six times before Fargo broke through with a four-run sixth inning to take control for good.

Valley City struck first on Jack Samuelson’s solo home run in the opening inning, but Fargo answered with two runs in the second. The Royals responded with a four-run bottom of the inning, highlighted by Corbyn Powell’s three-run home run, to grab a 5-2 advantage.

The Jets answered immediately. Ryan Ommen’s three-run homer keyed a five-run third inning that gave Fargo a 7-5 lead before Andrew Sykora doubled home a run later in the inning to knot the game at 6-6.

Fargo reclaimed the lead in the fourth on Isaac Mosbrucker’s sacrifice fly, but the Royals again answered. Powell drove in two runs with a groundout, and an error plated another run as Valley City moved back in front, 9-7. Fargo tied the game in the fifth before the Royals regained a 10-9 advantage when another Jets error allowed the go-ahead run to score.

The game turned in the sixth. Ommen cleared the bases with a three-run triple before Bo Purdy added a sacrifice fly, giving Fargo a 13-10 lead it would not relinquish.

Powell finished with four RBIs on two hits, while Parker Roelfsema and Bryson Heck each added two hits as the Royals totaled 10 hits. Samuelson’s first-inning home run accounted for Valley City’s first run of the afternoon.

Ommen delivered one of the tournament’s biggest offensive performances, going 5-for-5 with nine RBIs, including a three-run homer and a bases-clearing triple, while also hitting for the cycle.

The loss ends a memorable season for the Royals, who finished with a 25-8 record and captured the West Region championship before advancing to the Class A State Tournament’s final four. In their final game wearing a Valley City uniform, seniors Bryson Heck, Trevor Fetsch, Corbyn Powell and Jack Samuelson each crossed the plate at least once, closing out accomplished careers that helped lead the Royals to one of the program’s most successful seasons in recent years.
