The Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series Season 20 Presents: Dr. Ann Braaten (NDSU) speaking on “Changing Hearts and Minds: Woman Suffragists in North Dakota.” 7:30 PM Thursday, June 20th at the Barnes County Museum.

The 2019 BCHS Annual Meeting is slated for 7PM June 20th at the museum. All members are encouraged to come as we report on the events of the past year as well as elect board members.

This year’s speaker is Dr. Ann Braaten speaking on “Changing Hearts and Minds: Woman Suffragists in North Dakota.” The campaign to enfranchise women ended on Aug. 26, 1920 when the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution was put into law. This presentation will focus on the suffrage campaign in North Dakota and two prominent suffragists: Elizabeth Preston Anderson and Kate Selby Wilder and plans in the state to celebrate the centennial of the federal amendment.

Ann W. Braaten, PhD, is an associate professor of practice in the Department of Apparel, Design and Hospitality Management and curator of the Emily Reynolds Historic Costume Collection at North Dakota State University, Fargo. She studies the material culture of women to reveal their contributions to their families, business, and society. The public is cordially invited.

All Lectures are at the Barnes County Historical Society Museum and held in conjunction with Valley City State University. They are free and open to the public. For more information contact Wes Anderson at 701-845-0966
