ND (Jamestown College)- Jamestown College athletic director Lawrie Paulson announced today that head football coach Bud Etzold has resigned effective Jan. 6.

Etzold, who coached the Jimmies from 1995 to 1999, returned to the post in 2008. The 2011 season, Etzold’s ninth overall, saw the Jimmies finish with a record of 3-7.

“Jamestown College afforded me the opportunity to live the dream of coaching college football, and it’s hard to put into words how you appreciate something like that,” Etzold says. “The thought that I would ever walk the same sidelines as Rollie Greeno and follow in the footsteps of guys I looked up to – it doesn’t get any better than that.”

Under Etzold’s leadership, the Jimmies won two conference championships in 1997 and 1998, while advancing to the playoffs of the NAIA and being ranked no. 1 nationally in 1998.

“Certainly looking back there were special teams in terms of championships, but it’s the people you remember,” Etzold says. “Football is a vehicle that brings people together, and I’ve met people through the game of football and through Jamestown College who I never would have met otherwise.”

“Every decision Bud made relative to the football program was based upon what he thought was in the best interests of Jamestown College and our students,” Paulson says. “Bud did all he could to win every game, but his commitment to his team went way beyond Saturday afternoons. He wanted everyone in his program to be successful in life.  Ultimately, that’s what we are here to do.”
