CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) A proposed reservoir east of Cooperstown and north of Highway 200 along the Sheyenne River to store and hold back water would not be economically feasible according to an economist with the U-S Army Corps of Engineers.

Lance Awsumb (Awesome) says the benefit to cost ratio doesn’t add up to the specifications required to build a structure similar to Lake Ashtabula and Bald Hill Dam.

But Awsumb adds that the proposal isn’t completely off the table. He says that other smaller projects that are less costly are still in the discussion stage.

Griggs County Water Board member Barry Ronningen says that’s welcome news for businesses, school districts and rural fire department as well as landowners who would lose a lot of farm land from this project.

The proposed reservoir would store seven times the amount of water compared to Lake Ashtabula. The topic was discussed during a U-S Army Corps of Engineer feasibility study update last week in Valley City.
