CITY (NewsDakota.com) The first half of the regular season finale for the Valley City State University football team did not start out well at all.
Good thing there was a second half.
The Vikings, who trailed Robert Morris on Saturday by a 20-0 deficit at the halftime break scored on their first three drives of the third quarter, and held off the 22nd ranked Eagles 21-20.
Viking quarterback Tommy Zinke connected on passes of 35 and 11 yards to Colby Lum and Ken Eliacin and Taylor Cino scored on a 2 yard touchdown run; all coming in just a little under 12 minutes to start the second half. Zinke finished 120 yards passing, and Derek Elliott was the leading rusher for the vikings with 21 carries for 81 yards.
VCSU finished as a team with 161 yards on the ground, and 120 through the air; a far improvement from the first half, where the Vikings didn’t even break 100 total yards on offense.
Robert Morris (8-2) had a chance to win with less than 10 seconds remaining in the contest, but missed a 25 yard field goal.
VCSU finishes the season with a record of 7-3.
