(NewsDakota.com) Despite three first quarter turnovers and a 21-0 deficit, the Oakes High School football team fell less than a yard short of possibly tying the game at the end of regulation in their Class A Quarterfinal matchup with Park-River/Fordville-Lankin. The Aggies held Oakes out of the endzone with no time remaining to win 34-27 Saturday afternoon.

Oakes rallied in the second quarter with two Bryce Meehl touchdown passes, to pull within seven at halftime; and even tied the game in the third with an Eric Loepp two yard run. Aggies quarterback Abe Hankey threw a 19 yard touchdown pass later in the quarter, followed by a 26 yard run by Jackson Hankey in the early fourth to pad the lead.

The Tornadoes rallied with a touchdown pass to Carter Zetocha with 23 second remaining. On the next possession, the Aggies took three knees, punted, and gave Oakes six seconds from the Aggie 43 yard line. Meehl hit Zetocha but the reciever was tackled near the 1 yard line as time expired.

Oakes put up 486 yards of offense to PRFL’s 260.

PRFL faces Larimore in one of the Class A Semifinals next week; with the winner advancing to the Dakota Bowl. Oakes’ season ends with a record of 9-1.
