CITY, N.D. (VCSU) – Valley City State University (N.D.) men’s basketball coach Jeff Kaminsky announced today the addition of Darryl Howell, a transfer from Triton College (River Grove, Ill.) who will join the Vikings this fall.

A 6-foot-1 guard from Peoria, Ill., Howell has signed a letter of intent to attend VCSU and play for the Vikings starting this season. He’s coming off a highly successful year at Triton where he averaged 10 points per game while helping Triton to a 29-4 record and a No. 4 ranking in the final NJCAA Division 2 Poll.

“It is exciting to have Darryl join our program,” said Kaminsky. “We are getting a highly successful player from a truly outstanding program. Triton has been one of the top junior college programs in the nation.”

Howell was extremely efficient this season for Triton College, shooting 50.9 percent from the field and 48.5 percent from 3-point range. He averaged 10 points and 3.1 rebounds, and was the third leading scorer on the No. 4-ranked team in the nation.

“Darryl has great quickness and is a high percentage player who makes good decisions,” said Kaminsky. “He has a passion for the game and for continuing to improve. Darryl is a great addition to our program, and we are looking forward to the success he will have on and off the court.”

After graduating from Manual High School in Peoria, Howell went on to play two years at Triton. He averaged 7.5 points and 3.4 rebounds in his freshman season. Howell will have two seasons of eligibility remaining at VCSU.

“I am very happy to see Darryl end up with such a quality coach in Jeff Kaminsky and at such a solid program in Valley City State University,” said Steve Christiansen, head coach at Triton. “Darryl has worked hard the past two years at Triton and has been a big contributor to our success. It has been a pleasure coaching him, and I’m excited to see what the next two years have in store.”

Howell is the son of Lessa Smith and Darryl Howell. He plans to study sports management or criminal justice while at Valley City State. He joins Justyn Galloway (Rochester Community and Technical College) as signed recruits for the 2015-16 season.

Located in Valley City, N.D., Valley City State University is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the North Star Athletic Association conference (NSAA). The Vikings have posted 20-win seasons in four of the last eight years under Kaminsky, and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament in 2013.
