N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Updates on crop, pest and soil management recommendations will be the focus of the North Dakota State University Extension Service’s annual crop management field school.

It will be offered Thursday, June 15, starting at 9 a.m. at NDSU’s Carrington Research Extension Center (CREC). The school will provide hands-on training in field research and demonstration plots.

The program is designed for crop advisers, but it also will be beneficial for farmers.

Field sessions include:

* Weed identification – identify about 60 living weed exhibits, plus receive brief reviews on selected weed biology and control

* Herbicide site-of-action – identify herbicide classes by examining crop and weed injury symptoms

* Soil testing salt-affected soils – discussion on soil sampling procedures to aid in managing these challenging soils

* Late-season wheat disease management – review of foliar and head disease control strategies with fungicides

* Herbicide-tolerant soybean demonstration – identify five soybean types based on plant injury symptoms from postemergence herbicide application

* Unmanned aerial vehicles – identify practical field uses

Preregistration is required. A total of 50 participants will be accepted on a
first-come, first-served basis. Participants will receive reference materials,
refreshments and a noon meal. Certified crop advisers participating in the event
will receive 5.5 continuing education units in crop, pest, and soil and water
management.
