JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)- Behind 4 complete games that yielded just 1 earned run, The Valley City Saints ran the table at The 2018 North Dakota AA Amateur Tournament and walked away as state champions.

Shaun Kourajian was on the mound for game 1 Sunday. In a rematch of their opening round game The Saints beat Enderlin 2-1. They then met The Jamestown Greyhounds in the title game, Chase Carpenter pitched to a 5-1 victory.

Valley City scored 11 runs over the 4 games. They beat Enderlin in the opener 3-1 with Jesse Johnson on the mound and won their second game 1-0 with David Whitaker throwing a 3 hit shutout.

The state title is the first for The Saints since 2013.

Semifinals: Valley City  2 vs. Enderlin 1

Valley City fell behind for the first time in the tournament when The Indies had a runner reach home safely on an error in the first. Enderlin had their opportunities to increase their lead with bases runners on every inning except the 5th.

Kourajian was able to pitch his way out of several jams including runners on first and second with no outs in the 3rd. He’d register 7 strikeouts in the game.

Brady Anderson tied the game in the 5th with a double that scored Brian Fike. The winning was scored by Fike in the top of the 7th on a sac fly by Austin Smith.

Championship: Valley City 5 vs. Jamestown 1

The Saints took the lead early with their biggest inning of the tournament, they plated 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st. Anderson’s solo home run in the 3rd pushed Valley City’s lead to 4-0 before The Hounds got on the scoreboard.

In the 4th Jamestown started the inning with back to back base hits. Nate Soulis roped a hard double to the right field that brought home their only run of the game and the only earned run allowed by The Saints. Carpenter struck out the next 2 batters and Ben Baasch made a diving catch in left to end the inning.

Valley City scored once more in the 5th, it was Dalton Ondracek coming around on a double by Anderson.

Carpenter allowed a run on 8 hits with 7 punchouts.
