OAKES, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – OAKES, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – An Alabama man was injured after rolling a tanker truck hauling liquid herbicide near Oakes Thursday morning.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports that just before 9 AM, 51 year-old James Goins was directed by GPS onto a minimum maintenance road on a section line. Road conditions deteriorated and Goins stopped the semi to back out from the area. The truck and trailer than began to sink into the road, causing the load to shift and roll onto its right side.

“The tanker was carrying approximately 5,000 gallons of soil fumigant, a type of pesticide,” the North Dakota Health Department reports. “It does not appear that any of the fumigant was released; however, diesel fuel and motor oil were released from the engine. Initial estimates indicate about 100 gallons of diesel fuel and motor oil spilled into a flooded road ditch. “

Goins did not require treatment for his minor injuries. The incident remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol, NDDoH, and Dickey County Emergency Management. The Oakes Police Department, Dickey County Sheriff’s Department, and Oakes Ambulance assisted.
