N.D.–Jamestown College has announced that the 2011-12 arts season will begin with a performance by the world-renowned double reed ensemble New York Kammermusiker at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6 in the Reiland Fine Arts Center’s DeNault Auditorium.
Showcasing the sounds of oboes, bassoons and English horns, the New York Kammermusiker travels the world presenting a wide range of music, from the Renaissance through Contemporary periods, including many American works. Experiment and improvisation, as well as music written specifically for their unique sound, are important aspects of this group’s repertoire.
Formed in 1969 by North Dakota native Ilonna Pederson, the ensemble seeks to re-introduce the instruments and the music of the double reed band to modern audiences. Members have included musicians from the Vienna Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the San Francisco Symphony, to name a few.
The members of the Kammermusiker have been specially trained by the French organization Jeunesses Musicales de France to bring music to young audiences. In addition to concerts in dozens of countries on five continents, the ensemble frequently gives masterclasses and seminars on its tours.
The Jamestown College Friends of the Fine Arts will host a season opening reception prior to the performance from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. in the Reiland Fine Arts Center Lobby.
Tickets are $20 and can be reserved by contacting the Box Office at (701) 252-3467 ext. 2435.
