(NewsDakota.com)–Lisbon’s opportunistic defense helped set up their offense in the first half, and then the Broncos running game picked up the defense in the 2nd half. The Broncos ran for over 280 yards in a 28-13 victory over Milnor-North Sargent on Saturday night in Gwinner. It was the season opener for both teams, and their first meeting since the 2008 Class A playoffs.

After Lisbon went three and out on its first possession, the Bulldogs offense went to work. Milnor-NS was inside the Broncos’ 20 when Lisbon’s Dylan Urbach intercepted Bulldogs’ quarterback Josh Hansana at the Broncos 15-yard line and raced all the way to the Milnor-North Sargent 5-yard line. Hunter Mairs went in from four yards out two plays later, and it was 6-0 Lisbon. Jace Berg intercepted Hansana late in the 1st quarter, and Nick Anderson recovered a Bulldogs fumble at the Lisbon 7 with 7:46 remaining in the 2nd quarter. From there, the Broncos went on a 93-yard drive, ending with a Nathan Mangin 49-yard TD scamper and it was 12-0 Broncos at the half.

The Bulldogs scored to start the 2nd half on a 12 play, 73 yard drive. Hansana hit tight end Wyatt Mund for a 10-yard strike to cut it to 12-7. Urbach ran the ensuing kickoff to the Milnor-NS 42, where the Broncos scored in seven plays. Mangin’s 2nd rushing TD, this one from four yards out increased Lisbon’s lead to 20-7. Another Bulldogs drive ended in the red zone via turnover early in the 4th quarter, as Tyler Doll recovered a Bulldog fumble off an errant snap at the Lisbon 13.

Milnor-NS rallied back to 20-13 with 4:28 to play in the 4th quarter, as Hansana found Andrew Martinson for a 17-yard TD pass. The ensuing onside kick attempt was recovered by Lisbon’s Jenner Manske. The Broncos put the game away from there. A 60-yard drive, all on the ground, finished up with a 5-yard TD from Mairs in the final minute to make it 28-13.

Mangin led the Broncos with 124 yards on eight carries. Mairs added 15 carries for 81 yards. Hansana led the Bulldogs with 217 yards passing, with Mund the leading receiver with 57 yards on five receptions.
