CITY (NewsDakota.com)–The Hi-Liner offense found out it can score with Eastern Dakota Conference (EDC) competition Tuesday night.
But against one of the most prolific scorers in the league, their defense had issues.
A. J. Jacobson torched the Hi-Liners for 29 points, and Pat Strom added 24 in an 85-69 win by the Deacons over the Hi-Liners at the Hi-Liner Activity Center Tuesday night.
While Jacobson’s scoring was a bit more than average, Strom hit the Hi-Liners hard, knocking down six three-point shots and erasing positive Hi-Liner momentum on more than one occasion.
Valley City’s posts did their best to keep up. Chase Carpenter drained 12 field goals for 27 points, and Josh Magnuson finished shots much better against the Deacons than early in the Barnes County Tournament, scoring 12 points on six field goals.
The major swing for the Deacons came after halftime. Shanley scored on seven straight possessions after the break, blowing a seven-point game up to a 16-point lead.
The Deacons then ran into adversity. Jacobson, frustrated from a night he felt should have earned him a few more calls, was charged with a technical foul, forcing him to the bench in the interior of the second half.
With Jacobson out, the Hi-Liners started slicing into the lead. Carpenter and Brandyn Heck hit key threes, cutting the Deacon lead to six. Jacobson came to the table to check back in, and did so on a Hi-Liner turnover in their high-low game that stopped Valley City from cutting the lead to four.
Jacobson then went on a rampage, scoring 10 second-half field goals to blow the lead back to 15 quickly. Shanley stretched the game to 20 before setting for the 16-point win.
Valley City drops to 2-2, 0-1 in the EDC, and faces Fargo South Thursday.
