CITY (NewsDakota.com)–While the Viking men stayed put, the Viking women dropped to the outside looking in in this week’s Association of Independent Institutions (AII) team rankings.
The Viking men remained second to Jamestown College this week in the mens AII rankings. The men have won four straight, and topped the top-ranked Jimmies 86-83 in overtime in Jamestown Wednesday.
The Jimmies entered last week ranked seventh in the nation, with the Vikings 17th. The national poll will be released later today.
The Viking women were penalized for three straight losses and dropped to fifth in this week’s rankings, down three spots. Cal State-San Marcos, Indiana Northwest and Mayville State all moved past the Viking women.
The women lost in overtime at Dickinson State two Saturdays ago, then dropped a 49-47 decision at Jamestown College Wednesday. Mayville State then took an 83-69 win over the Vikings last Saturday, a loss that ensured the Vikings a drop this week.
The top four teams in the AII rankings advance to the AII tournament February 23rd. They will meet the host team, Dakota State, for a five-team field. With the Viking women ranked fifth and Dakota State not among the top four, the Vikings would not qualify for the tournament.
As of today on the men’s side, Jamestown College, Valley City State, Dakota State, Dickinson State and Mayville State would be the field for the tourney.
