(NewsDakota.com) Supporters of abolishing North Dakota’s property tax are suing Tax Commissioner Cory Fong and other officials. The lawsuit says Fong and other officials shouldn’t be campaigning against the measure.

Robert Hale of Minot is a Measure 2 supporter. He says Fong and others are spreading false information about the proposal.

An opponent of Measure 2, State Chamber of Commerce president Andy Peterson says the lawsuit itself is false.

State law bans spending public money on initiative campaigns. The fight is about a constitutional amendment to abolish property taxes.

The measures’s supporters say public officials and groups representing cities, counties and school districts are spreading falsehoods about the measure’s effects. Measure 2 will be on the June 12 Primary/Election.

Measure 2 supporter LeRoy Neubauer of Valley City is the Co-chairman of “Empower The Taxpayer” group. Neubauer says, “the measure will replace property taxes with funding from other state sources.” He says the redistribution of the state’s oil revenue is one of the primary areas where funding could be used to replace property tax revenue.

Neubauer believes if the measure passes it will provide an incentive for businesses from other states to move to North Dakota.

Neubauer says the public is invited to the Valley City Eagles Club on Saturday, February 25 at 2pm for a presentation on Measure 2. He says it will direct the North Dakota Legislature to eliminate property taxes and replace the funding with a more equitable method. The event is free and open to the public.
