(NewsDakota.com) The Oakes Fire Department responded to a small Anhydrous Ammonia leak in a group of tanks located on the north side of town near North Dakota Highway 1 on Saturday.

Oakes Fire Chief Jerry Hollingsworth says crews responded to the call around 6:30 Saturday night. The Fire Department was in the process of hosting their annual banquet at the Angry Beaver Lodge in town when the call came out.

Hollingsworth said the leak was small, and was contained in a relatively short time. No injuries were reported.

Anhydrous ammonia is a colorless gas with a sharp odor. In small amounts, symptoms can include burning of eyes, nose, and throat after breathing in the gas. High levels can cause chemical burns to the lungs, which can lead to death.
