service for Herbert L. Carlson, 94, of Monango will be 2:00 pm, Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Carlsen Funeral Home in Ellendale. The Rev. Galen Sylvester will officiate.
Burial will be in Mapleview Cemetery, rural Fullerton, ND with military graveside rites.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Herbert died April 24, 2012 at Prince of Peace Care Center in Ellendale.
Herbert L. Carlson, son of John and Ella (Gamber) Carlson was born November 28, 1917 at Fullerton, ND. He was educated in a country school and graduated from Fullerton High School in 1935. In 1937, he entered the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked in Glacier National Park, Montana. He returned home and worked as a farm hand and on the family farm.
He entered the United States Army where he served as a Staff Sergeant during World War II from 1942-1945. He was stationed in the Pacific Theatre, Australia, New Guinea, Philippines and Japan where he served as a medic. He returned to the family farm and in 1950 he and his brother, Vernon took over the operation. They farmed together until the late 1980’s.
He was united in marriage to Betty Geiszler Rithmiller on July 12, 1990 in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Monango. They made their home in Monango. He entered nursing care in October of 2011.
Herbert enjoyed visiting with his neighbors and driving around the countryside surveying the crops. Herbert attended Zion Lutheran Church in Ellendale; he was the Valley Township Assessor from 1964-1995 and was a member of Herman Schlinker American Legion Post #137 in Ellendale where he had been a past Post Commander.
Herbert is survived by his wife, Betty of Monango, one step-son, Walter Rithmiller of Ellendale, one sister, Doris (Wayne) Ulmer of Oakes, ND, two brothers, Ward Carlson of Vallejo, CA and Vernon (Judy) Carlson of Braddock, ND and one step-granddaughter, Katie Rithmiller.
His parents, one sister and three brothers preceded him in death.
Casketbearers will be Tim Smith, David Kinzler, Dean Ulmer, Michael Ulmer, Wayne Ulmer and Fred Raatz.
The organist will be Katie Miller.
