(NewsDakota.com) – Some of the nation’s best National Guard shooters hail from the Jamestown area.

The North Dakota National Guard says Spc. Tyrel Hoppe of the 817th Engineer Company based in Jamestown, took eighth place overall last week during the 41st Winston P. Wilson Championship at the National Guard Marksmanship Training Center at Camp Robinson, Ark.

North Dakota sent two four-man teams to the event, which featured more than 400 competitors from 44 states. One North Dakota team was composed of four members of the 817th in Jamestown: Hoppe, Staff Sgt. Adam Gehlhar, Spc. Evan Messer, and Spc. Levi Harrington.

The Jamestown team took second place in the Rapid Fire Engagement match with an M-16 rifle. Hoppe took first place in the Reflexive Fire Match event and took eighth place in the overall event.  Spc. Levi Harrington and Sgt. 1st Class Russell Gerhardt out of Camp Grafton also placed in the overall Top 50. The three North Dakota shooters in the Top 50 earn the designation as a “Chief’s 50” shooter and a chance to compete for a position on the “All Guard” marksmanship team.
