– The Jamestown Optimist Club has named its athletes of the week for the week ending May 5.

High School Girls: Abby Wanzek, Junior, Blue Jay Girls’ Soccer. Abby is a forward/midfielder. She had three goals in Saturday’s game vs Grand Forks Central. She was also a huge factor in the midfield defensively.

High School Boys: Jordan Thoreson, Senior, Blue Jay Boys’ Track & Field. Jordan qualified for the state track and field meet with his performance in the shot put at the Packer Relays. Jordan placed second with an effort of 48’ 9”.

Female College Athlete of the Week: Taylor Miller, Freshman, Jimmie Women’s Track & Field Team.
Hometown: Mandan, North Dakota
Taylor ran a career best time of 26.09 to place second in the 200 Meters at the Ron Masanz Classic Meet in Moorhead on Saturday. Taylor also ran the quickest 400 split in the Jimmie 4 x 400 relay that finished 6th.

Male College Athlete of the Week: Nico Moreno, Junior, Jimmie Baseball Team
Hometown: Glendale, California
Nico, Jimmie third baseman, was 6-for-12 for a .500 batting average, a run scored and four RBI in the three games of the A.I.I. Tournament in San Marcos. Nico finished the season with a .329 average, 7 homers, and 35 RBI.
