(NewsDakota.com)–While the Hi-Liners learned that they would not make a return trip to state this year, the man that sent them home played four extra holes for the medalist honors.

Fargo South claimed the sixth-place finish at the East Region Golf Meet at Edgewood in Fargo today, firing a team 321, one shot better than Valley City’s 322.

Had the team’s tied, Valley City had the tiebreaker.

Landon Poss led the Bruins to the state meet, carding a 35 on both sides for a one-under 70 on the day.  The Bruins then counted scores of 79, 85, and 87 to advance to state.

Valley City’s Nick Jenson led the Hi-Liners with a 73.  Ben Sorenson shot 81, Tyler Stevens carded an 82, and Jared Lentz scored an 86.

“We got off to a rough start today,” said Hi-Liner head coach Buff Murray.  “I told the guys they would need to pick it up on the back nine to make it, and they did.  But, we came up a shot short.”

Jenson’s 73 landed him in a tie for fifth at the meet, adding All-East Region honors to his All-Eastern Dakota Conference (EDC) honors won with his scoring average throughout the year, placing in the top 10 in both categories.

“When I heard where the other guys were at, I was more aggressive on some putts on the back nine, and it worked out for me.  It just wasn’t enough for the team,” said Jenson.

Fargo Shanley won the team title, getting a surprising 74 from their #6 golfer, Ben Wobaum, to fight off West Fargo by five shots, 290 to 295.  Wahpeton was third with a 310, Fargo Davies fourth with a 314, and Grand Forks Red River fifth with a 315.

Poss and West Fargo’s Connor Holland then added drama to the end of the day.  Holland rolled in a two-foot birdie put on 18 to score a 70 and send the medalist race back to hole 10, a 397-yard par-four.  After playing even through the par-four 11th and par three 12th, Poss emerged a shot better on the par-five 13th for the win.

The Hi-Liners will send Jenson, Sorenson, and Lentz to the state meet as individuals, all qualifying at the regular season qualifier at the end of the EDC season.  The state meet is in Dickinson next week.
