City, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) Detective Mark McDonald has served as the acting police chief in Valley City since last summer and the city commission thanked him for his added service to the department.

City commissioner Jon Wagar, had the police portfolio.

Mayor Bob Werkhoven says McDonald was placed in a tough situation and handled it well.

New Police Chief Fred Thompson will take over at the end of this month. Thompson recently served as a Police Captain with the Henderson, Nevada police department. He has 29 years in law enforcement.
